Useful Tips for Grandparents of Twins

by Twins Magazine

Grandparenting twins can be an exciting, fun (and often exhausting) experience. You’ll soon finding yourself getting familiar with the unique needs of twins. Some tips from the trenches:

Educate Yourself

The first step in becoming a successful grandparent to twins is to educate yourself about twins and multiples. There are  resources out there (like us ;)) to help you learn about the unique needs of twins, including books, websites, and support groups. Some great resources to check out include:

Stay Positive and Upbeat

Multiples can be a lot of work, but also tons of fun! Try to focus on the positive aspects of grandparenting twins, such as the joy of watching them grow and develop. Avoid dwelling on the challenges, and instead, look for ways to make the most of your time with your grandkids.

Be Prepared to Help Out

Another important aspect of grandparenting twins is being prepared to help out. Multiples are a handful, and parents will likely appreciate any help you can offer. Some ways you can help out include:

  • Offering to babysit: This will give the parents a much-needed break and allow you to spend quality time with your grandkids.
  • Helping with household chores: Offer to help with laundry, cooking, or cleaning to take some of the pressure off the parents.
  • Providing financial support: Twins can be expensive, so offering to help with the cost of diapers, formula, or other supplies can be a big help.

Don’t Worry About Telling Them Apart

One of the biggest challenges of grandparenting twins can be learning to tell them apart. However, there are some simple tips you can follow to make this easier. Look for identifying marks like moles or birthmarks, and avoid using comparative identifiers like “the bigger one” or  (yikes) “the smarter one.” Instead, try to use their names as much as possible and help them develop their own individual identities.

Support their Individuality

Avoid comparing the kids to each other, and instead, focus on their unique qualities and interests. Encourage them to pursue their own hobbies and interests, and help them develop their own individual identities.
